Quinta do Vallado 10 years Port

Port is a fortified wine made primary from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão (plus around 75 other indigenous grapes) that are hand-picked from the wineries estate vineyards. Port wines are intended to be sweet, so fermentation is arrested half way through the process, before all the residual sugar has been fermented. Fermentation is halted through the addition of grape spirits, thus fortifying the wine. The wine is aged in 600 litre oak casks for years during which time the complex aromas and flavours become thoroughly integrated and the distinct hue develops.

Tasting Notes

Mahogany red colour, offering delicious, elegant and fresh aromas and flavours of toffee, dried apricot, berry and spice. Finishes with orange zest and a hint of coconut. Fresh overall with honey/nut/brulee entry sweetness; bright, quality spirit and lovely tannins give a clean, dry finish. Stylish!

Grape variety: Mixture of various old vine varieties (Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Franca among others).

Vinification: Harvested and crushed quickly with a fast, warm maceration to extract maximum colour, flavour and tannin from the grape skins before the half-fermented wine is fortified with grape spirit.

Ageing: The wine is aged for many years in very old 600 litre oak casks.

Best served with: With Stilton or fois gras as an appetiser.

Serving temperature: 12°C.
