Nikolaihof Baumpresse im Weingebirge Gruner Veltliner Federspiel 2013

With a 12-meter-long press beam, the 350-year-old wine press is the largest still existing in the world. The gentle giant presses the grapes for over ten hours, which then mature to wines of exceptional character. The wine is fermented on the grapes own, natural yeasts. No additional sugars, enzymes, flavour enhancers, or specially cultured yeasts are added. In the vineyards of Nikolaihof Wachau no use is made of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, or any other chemical-synthetical treatments. To strengthen the vines and the soil we work with the horn silica- and the horn-manure-preparate. For an optimal nutrient supply of the vines, various grasses, herbs and flowers are grown in our vineyards.

Tasting Notes

This Grüner Veltliner, with its delicacy and clarity, is certainly something for those who otherwise prefer Riesling. The wine shows an impressively deep, relaxed, darkly spicy nose that oscillates between herbs such as anise, ground stone, cold ash and bruised stone fruit along with some waxy notes. It seems increasingly earthy with air, only slightly vegetal, but cool and lively.he wine is defined by an almost silky texture on the palate, by a creamy melting and notes that remind of Virginia tobacco. It is a meditation wine that can be given plenty of air and time, which then becomes increasingly complex and transparent in its balance of spice, fine stone fruit and light phenolic.
